Captions
My school newspaper is compartmentalized into two different classes: content and digital. Over the last few years, I have dedicated much of my time to encouraging communication between both classes because it's hard to produce one newspaper and have two separate classes. One product of miscommunication is photos and graphics versus stories. In a youth newspaper (no professionals), a frequent mistake is choosing photos or graphics that don't actually match the story itself. However, that's what captions are for! Here are a few examples of how I've used captions to illuminate photos.
INCORRECT: PPCHS Teacher stands before the camera, smiling eagerly before her NHS club meeting.
CORRECT: Ms. Palacio, a Pines Charter teacher, stands in front of the "River of Grass," where she once stood when she was a student at Charter. She smiles as she reflects on her full circle moment.
INCORRECT: Sebi took on her last Winter Fantasy event with a very deep song that she wrote.
CORRECT: Sebi "Rose" Reyes-Farinas closed the 2023 Winter Fantasy with "Goodbye," a song she wrote during her first week of high school. Effortlessly holding back tears, she crossed her arms during a sentimental moment when she sang, "Oh, high school, this isn't our last goodbye."
INCORRECT: Number 10 slams the ball into the basket, making the score a tie game.
CORRECT: Joshie Harris catapulted to the basket, releasing a one-of-a-kind slam dunk while the opposing team players try to knock him down. After successfully claiming the tie-game shortly after this play, he humbly helped a player up from the ground.
INCORRECT: Two friends hugged each other as they walked the homecoming red carpet. Stopping for a picture, they couldn't hold in their laughs.
CORRECT: Kaitlyn Jorgenson and Hibba Waqar have been bestfriends since fifth grade. When they first saw each other during the 2023 PPCHS Homecoming, they stopped to take a picture but couldn't bare to stay serious.
My Photos
Although not journalism-related, I've taken the time to experiment with photography over the last few years of having an iPhone.
